DRIVING TIPS FOR RAINY DAYS

When it rains, wet roads can create many hazards. The City of Commerce Emergency Management Office provides the following tips for avoiding problems while driving on wet streets.

Dust and oil builds up on the roadway due to a lack of precipitation. When it rains, the water mixes with the oil and dust causing the roads to be slick and creating a potentially dangerous situation.

To Avoid Skidding:

Drive slowly, especially on curves. Steer and brake lightly. To stop or slow down, brake gently by applying mild pressure to the brake pedal.
If you begin to skid, easy your foot off of the gas pedal and carefully steer in the direction you want the car to go.
If you do not have antilock breaks, avoid slamming on the brakes or using the brakes at all.
Hydroplaning occurs when water in front of your tires builds up faster than your car’s weight can push it out of the way.
If hydroplaning, do not brake or turn suddenly because you will begin to skid. Ease off the gas pedal until the car slows down and you can feel your tires meet the road again.
If you must brake, do it gently with a light pumping action.
If you have anti-lock brakes, brake normally.
