In a great effort to build enough affordable “motor cars for the great multitude”, Henry Ford introduced the continuous moving assembly line on this day, December 1, in 1913. A fantastic Spark of Genius, the new assembly line could produce a complete car every two-and-a-half minutes. This shortened the build time of one vehicle from 12 hours to a mere two hours and 30 minutes. Speaking of the vehicles: “When I’m through, ” he said, “about everybody will have one”. Well, if you’ve seen the traffic in LA, you’ll know Henry Ford had it just about right.
